Soursop, a Fruit Plant with a Multitude of Benefits

Soursop plants are annual fruit plants, which grow well in lowlands and highlands with an altitude of 100-1000 meters above sea level. The optimal temperature for soursop growth is between 22-28ºC with rainfall of 1500-2500 mm/year and good humidity of around 60-80%. Soursop (Annona muricata L.) is a fruit that has a sweet and slightly sour taste that is consumed directly or made into fruit juice. The composition of soursop fruit is fruit flesh (67.5%), skin (20%), seeds (8.5%), and pith (4%). Almost all parts of the soursop plant (leaves, roots, stems, fruit, and soursop seeds) are used as a source of medicine, and the seeds are used as insecticides because the seeds contain poison.

Queen Soursop

This variety was inaugurated by the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia in 1988. This soursop has large fruit, sweet and sticky fruit taste, and few and small seeds.

Mandalika Soursop

Mandalika variety is a soursop that is harvested with a seasonal system, which is around June-August, unlike other soursop fruits that need to wait a long time to harvest. The fruit is yellowish green when ripe with few thorns. Mandalika soursop fruit is similar in shape to nona fruit, with a sweet fruit taste, thick yellowish flesh with few seeds.

Soursop is one of the fruit commodities that has quite high economic and social value. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), soursop production in Indonesia in 2022 reached 143,295 tons. This number is slightly reduced compared to the previous year (2021) with a total of 158,926 tons or a decrease of around 9.83%. Soursop is not only distributed domestically, but also sent abroad. Soursop fruit and leaves are in great demand, especially the leaves which are used as alternative medicine. Dried soursop leaves have been exported to Germany as much as 5.2 kg at a price of 530 thousand rupiah. Meanwhile, frozen soursop fruit has been exported to the United States and Canada with a total of 25,000 tons. Soursop export data is still very limited, so it is hoped that Indonesian soursop exports can reach various countries in Europe and America that need soursop as a source of fruit or a source of alternative medicine.
